Today is a day of introductions...Welcome to class!  The intention of this blog is to inform my students and parents about what is going on in our 7th and 8th grade Art class here at LeCreole Middle School in beautiful Dallas, Oregon.  Postings will occur about two to four times a week. Please be patient with the page design, as this blog is my first.  Hopefully it will become more interesting as time goes on...

Today we will see a short presentation about our art class. It covers the following information:

*I will hand out a Syllabus, a sketchbook, and an art file.
*We will be learning about the Elements of Art.  This includes Line, Value, Texture, Shape, Form,
Space and Color.
*A little about me and a great video about Oregon.
*A review of the "Art Class Guide".
*Three assignments we will be working on for the rest of the week:

   1.  Decorating our sketchbooks.

   2.  Making a series of four drawings to document our skill level at the beginning of the class:
Fold a sheet of 12"x18" paper in half like a book.  On each of the four sides draw one of the
following four subjects with a pencil as best as you can:
        a. Your hand relaxed with the palm facing up.
        b. A self portrait (use a mirror).
        c. A portrait of someone you know from memory (a friend, a relative, a celebrity, etc).
        d. Something you are good at drawing (Everyone is good at drawing SOMETHING).

    3.   New students will make personality swirls from 18"x18" paper.
          a. Find center of paper.
          b. With pencil, draw 12 curving lines radiating out from the center.
          c. In every other section write the following words:  first name, last name, descriptive word,                     descriptive word, descriptive word, and descriptive word.
          d. Words may be in any font.
          e. Words must be stretched to fit along most of the swirl.
          f. Draw a complex pattern(s) in the rest of the swirl sections.
          g. Color with crayon, color pencil, marker.

4. Returning students will make a Radial Name Design on 18"x18" paper.  Here is a link for
      those instructions.

*We will have a funeral for the phrase "I Can't" so that we will be better prepared to learn about art.
It will look something like this.
*Finally we will watch a short video by Phil Hanson of Goodbye Art Academy called, "What is Art".
